HERSTORY

The guidance counsellor in high school wouldn’t have been able to tell me what an Analyst was, and so I guess it wasn’t surprising that I didn’t know either.

“What’s an analyst?” I asked my next door neighbour, an investment banker at (then) Solomon-Smith Barney, as we were sitting on my porch sipping lemon martinis and handing out candies to kids at Hallowe’en. It was a balmy night. At the time I had been doing basic research in the Pharmacology Department at U of T in the area of schizophrenia, but basic research is a LONG way away from medical treatment. And I wanted to DO something more goal-oriented, with shorter timelines.

That was the impetus for my career move from academic research to finance. I started as sell-side analyst on Bay Street for a boutique investment dealer where I covered small-cap Canadian biotech companies, and from there I went to the buy-side at Scotia Cassels Investment Counsel to cover North American Equities (Healthcare). It was exciting. It was definitely a faster pace! Gone was the sleepy pace of lab work, replaced with a deluge of conference calls and deep-dives into data from conferences. I covered the Pharma companies, Biotechs, PBMs, HMOs, Med Devices, CROS, Drug Distributors, the Labs, all of it. I did try to pawn the HMOs off to our banking analyst: “They’re INSURANCE companies” I would say, to which he would respond, “They’re HEALTHCARE companies.” I never won that argument.

And it was great-- the scientific breadth I ended up covering satisfied my curious half, and the financial analysis satisfied my analytical half. But after a few years, I missed the depth, the deep deep dive into individual companies, getting to know the founders and entrepreneurs, and the solutions they were trying to bring to market. So eventually I left the banking sector, and I’ve never been more engaged than I am now, when I am working with entrepreneurial healthcare companies.
